Dr. Wyndham's Year-End Message

Dr. Wyndham's Year-End Message

Hello, Avon families.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve reached the end of another school year. This year has been full of individual, school-level, and district-wide highlights that are worth celebrating.

As you know, this school year marks our transition in structure — from what we have been to what we are becoming. For the last few years, we have been planning and preparing for the redistricting that will come into effect this summer. Projects at Intermediate East and West will wrap up this summer as those buildings transition to K-5 elementary schools. We’re completing construction of our new Avon Middle School West and smaller projects at our two current middle schools — North and South — so that they can serve students in grades 6-8. We’re also wrapping up completion of our renovation and expansion project at Avon High School. Projects of this scale require a lot of effort and participation from many people. Students helped us choose the names for Evergreen and Willow. And nearly 100 parents/guardians and employees participated in our redistricting committee last fall. At each step along the way, your input and feedback has been extremely valuable and helped us make strong decisions that will serve us well for years to come.

Now, I want to share a few of the many highlights from this school year. Students excelled in their academic and extracurricular activities. This week, 860 students will walk across the stage earning an Avon High School diploma. AHS (a National Blue Ribbon School) had a record seven national merit finalists recognized this year based on their academic excellence. AHS Juniors achieved SAT results that were 14% higher than the national average in Math and 10% higher than the national average in Reading/Writing. In Indiana, 2nd graders are now required to take I-READ, the state’s literacy assessment, and we saw an 11% gain from last year to this year in the percent of students passing that assessment.

Our Speech team, Dance team, Marching Black & Gold, mixed Show Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Indoor Winds, and Percussion groups all won state titles.  Student-athletes Nathan Rioux and Milyn Kirsh won wrestling and track state championships.  Our Board of School Trustees earned Indiana’s highest honor, 1 of only 5 School Boards in the state to receive the Exemplary Governance Award. We also had numerous teachers in our district receive state and national recognition.

As I mentioned, these are just a few of the highlights from this school year. If you want to see a much more complete list, visit the 2024-25 Highlights webpage.

We’ve been able to accomplish so much because of our supportive community. Thanks to our 2018 Referendum, our class sizes have remained low, our teachers are paid competitively which helps us recruit and retain the best teachers for our students, and we’ve significantly increased supports and programs available to our students by increasing counselors, school resource officers, special education and multi-lingual teachers, coaches, clubs, and much more.

In Avon Schools we are committed to transparency and wise financial stewardship. We published a fun and informative series of videos this year to help educate our community about how school finance works. You can check them out on our Finance webpage.

The bottom line is that our state does not adequately fund our public schools — so without our community stepping up through the referendum, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish all that we have. You can learn more about what this referendum has meant to Avon Schools on our website. I’ll be sharing more information in the coming weeks — so please be on the lookout.

On behalf of our entire team at Avon Schools, I want you to know that it is our privilege to partner with you in helping students achieve their full potential. I am looking forward to the new school year. In the meantime, we have a class of 860 seniors to celebrate at the AHS commencement ceremony on Friday, May 30, and a summer break to enjoy.

Thank you for another incredible school year. Have a safe and memorable summer. Go Orioles!

Sincerely,
